Jason Myers
Jason Myers was born on May 22, 1972, after driving over some very bumpy railroad tracks in Minto, NB.
Music was a surprise to Jason, discovering it a little late in life at the age of 26.
Jason was raised in Beresford, Northern NB – and lived there till 1988 when the family moved to the Town of Bathurst…just a few miles away.
Since then – its been a rollercoaster of jobs and places to live, bouncing all over the country. After a stint in the Military, Jobs includes his IT work, rough necking in Alberta on the Oil rigs, surveying pipeline in Fort McMurray, a Belt Mechanic in Edmonton AB, driving school bus, and an assortment of other little adventures.
Music came to Jason in the form of a gifted fiddle player from PEI, named Stephen Chaisson. It was from him that he heard music played right in front of him, and that was his first real personal experience with music. It was Celtic in nature – jigs and airs and reels and waltzes. The music came from the rocks, the trees, the water, the sky.
He decided on a Tin Whistle – influenced by Spirit of the West’s “Save this House” album.
But melody will meet song at some point – and from the Irish sessions in Saint John with his many supportive musical friends who tolerated his bird killing calls, he started to sing in the maritime traditions….Stan Rogers and the like. The songs sounded as eternal and as elemental as the tunes did – and the singing gave him a new exposure to the magic of the music not known before
When those sessions lost their rhythm guitar player – well lets just say the music was not the same. It was such a blow to the sessions tempo and feel, but it opened a door as Jason and a insurance settlement yielded an acoustic guitar, and once again – those same friends taught him the basic chords to get started, and the music, at least in his ears, continued to ring.
The guitar was a chording and percussive thing, not lyrical or melodic…least not in the way Jason interpreted it. Learning to accompany jigs and reels, and the chord progressions that followed, proved fertile ground for song accompaniment…and the ability to self accompany a song soon followed.
During this time – his much-accomplished musical friend in Hampton NB, named Jeff Matheson, formed a band that would prove a college education in Music. 39toes was formed, and played together for about 5 years.
So dabbling in songwriting, a new journey has begun. To become a singer songwriter…just like that. Like it can happen in an instant. Jason feels like one “good” song can make that happen…..
Best of luck….Love and Music.
